mounted on the main generator frame. A starting field on the main generator permits starting the engine from the battery, as previously mentioned. The four Westinghouse 370-B traction motors are nose-suspended and geared to the outer axles of each truck. The gear ratio is 21:58 and the maximum speed of the locomotive is 90 m.p.h. The motors are force-ventilated, separate fans blowing air through the center pin and truck frame. The auxiliary generator of the generator-exciter set supplies power for charging the 56-cell storage battery, and for the control and lighting circuits. A voltage regulator holds a constant voltage on the auxiliary generator at all engine speeds. The exciter is of the differential type and furnishes power for exciting the field of the main generator. The exciter, in conjunction with an engine control load regulator, maintains full load on the diesel engine throughout the operating range. The control of the locomotive is electro-pneu- matic and provides for two steps of field shunting. Transition from full field to shunted field is auto- matic. Engine speed is controlled by a governor with pneumatic operator, a movement of the throt- tle resulting in a corresponding movement of the governor operators on each of the two engines. The only connection between the throttle handle |
and the governor, consists of a single air line, thus eliminating all complicated levers and mechanical connections. This arrangement simplifies the oper- ation of two or more locomotive units in multiple, controlled from one cab. In addition to the gover- nor, an independent over-speed stop is provided. Wheel-slip control is a feature of every Baldwin- Westinghouse diesel-electric locomotive. Relays automatically reduce power when wheels slip, and give an audible indication in the operator's compartment. This device works through the en- gine governor, reducing diesel engine speed as soon as wheels start to slip. When slipping stops, the engine speed is smoothly increased until it corresponds with the position of the throttle han- ![]() |
