HE Terminal Railroad Association is a cor-
poration organized under the laws of the State
|
of Missouri in the year 1889. It was the successor
of several smaller terminal companies which had
been formed, prior to that date, to handle the
|
ever-growing problem of railroad traffic entering
and leaving the St. Louis area.
Prior to 1864, there were but few industries
located in or about St. Louis and East St. Louis,
which had railway track connections. Freight and

|
passenger traffic, between these in-
dustries and the railways, had to be
handled by horse-drawn vehicles and
the ferries then operating across the
Mississippi River. It was to facili
tate the handling of this traffic that
plans were made to construct a bridge
across the river, and to provide ter-
minal facilities on both the east and
west banks. The St. Louis and Illi-
nois Bridge Company was incor-
porated in 1864, and four years later
began the construction of the famous
Eads Bridge which was finally com-
pleted on July 4, 1874. Concurrently
