A NEW Baldwin locomotive type, the most powerful single unit Diesel-electric thus far built, is riding the rails, marking a milestone in locomotive development. The streamlined giant, built for the Seaboard Air Line Railway, generates 3,000 hp from two supercharged engines mounted in one cab, thus marking a forward step in the evolution of Diesel- electric motive power. Heretofore in locomotives of more than 2,000 hp, it has been necessary to provide two or more units coupled together to |
provide the needed power. This latest member of the complete Baldwin-Westinghouse line has many design features which recommend it to the attention of any one interested in railroad motive power. The Diesel-electric has always had the advan- tage of low axle loading and freedom from dy- namic augment, but heretofore it has suffered the disadvantage of the great length of multiple units in relation to horsepower, the difficulty of includ- ing in the design a desirable excess of traction |
