The Terminal has 126 locomotives in service, 95
steam and 31 diesel, with an additional six steam
locomotives in reserve in the back shop. Of the
31 diesels, 12 are of 660-hp. and 19 are of 1000-
hp. capacity.
The 660-hp. units include four from each of the
major builders, namely, Baldwin, American Loco-
motive, and Electro-Motive. The 1000-hp.units
are made up of six Baldwin, eight Alco, and five
Electro-Motive locomotives.
Ten of the 660-hp. locomotives are assigned to
passenger coach service, while the remaining two
are on light industrial assignments. The nineteen
1000-hp. units are assigned to freight service.
The Baldwin 660-hp. locomotives are used for
coach handling in and around Union Station.

The Baldwin 1000-hp. engines are handling
freight train cars in the Eads District, The work
over the Eads Bridge, and through the Tunnel to
the Central District Yard, is one of the toughest
assignments on the system. A typical load for a
Baldwin 1000-hp. engine consists of 40 loaded oil
cars over a 1 1/2 per cent grade. With a second
diesel as a helper, as many as 90 loaded cars are
handled.
Two of the Baldwin 660-hp. diesels started work
in the 1940 and two more went into service in 1942.
Three of the Baldwin 1000-hp. diesels were deliv-
ered in 1941, followed by three more in 1942. All
of these locomotives are making fine record for
availability, dependability, and low operating and
maintenance costs.
