A glance at the accompanying map will show
how the Terminal Railroad acts as a hub of the
great railroad systems radiating from St. Louis.
Over its right of way moves the bulk of all the through
traffic and a large percentage of local traffic.
The magnitude of the services can be gauged by
the record of a representive twenty-four hour day
in which the Terminal interchanged 9302 loaded
cars and 7739 empties. On June 19, 1942, a high
total of 18,967 cars were interchanged, The pas-
senger schedule of the Union Station regularly in-
|
cludes 84 outbound and 86 inbound trains per day
The total number of trains frequently rises
to 200 per day, exclusive of special train move-
ments.
All eastern trains use the Merchants Bridge or
the Eads Bridge, except the Pennsylvania , Balti-
more & Ohio, and the Illinois Central which use
the Municipal Bridge. Termnial motive power is
used to handle passenger trains of the Louisville
& Nashville, Southern, and Illinois Central in and
out of Union Station. All other roads use their
own power.
