pacity of each track; they know just how many
cars they can hang on any one locomotive and
still make the schedule; they carry an active,
mental picture of the entire operation.
These transportation men evaluate quick
starts and the fast "kicking" done with Diesel-
electric power. They know that with zero
weather there are no freeze-ups. They know
what it means to have maximum starting trac-
tive effort to break loose the cold car journals
after they have been standing a day or two.
No time is taken out by the Diesel-electric
switcher for taking water or coal. When the
small or older industries need to be "pulled"
or a car is to be spotted, there is no need to
think of the wheel arrangement or road num-
ber of the locomotive on the job, the Diesel-
electric will go anywhere that a box car will
clear. A great saving is made here especially
when old road power which has been con-
verted for use in switching service is replaced.
